Fleece Warms Up Mountain Athletes
Fleece is the most useful cold-weather layer most riders already own. The trick is knowing which type, and when to wear it under a shell.

Outdoor brands such as Kuhl helped popularise technical fleece as a mid layer for climbers and riders who need warmth without weight. The idea behind it is simple: trap air, move moisture, and stay light enough to stuff in a pack.
Why fleece still works
Fleece is a polyester pile fabric. Its lofted structure holds air, which insulates, and its fibres wick moisture away from the skin far better than cotton. Unlike down, fleece keeps some insulation value when damp, which matters when you are sweating on a climb and then descending into cold air.
- Weight: 100 to 200 weight fleece suits active riding; heavier pile suits static use.
- Grid fleece: channels between lofted zones dump heat fast on climbs.
- Pile fleece: maximum warmth per gram, less wind resistance.
- Windproof laminate: warmer on descents, but less breathable on climbs.
Using fleece in a riding system
The classic mistake is wearing fleece as an outer layer in wind. Fleece blocks almost no wind, so the moment you descend, you feel every gust. Put a thin windproof or shell over it and the same jacket becomes genuinely warm.
Fleece handles moisture. The shell handles wind. Together they cover most mountain weather.
Three conditions, three setups
- Cold start, warming day: fleece over a base layer, shell in the pack.
- Steady cold: base layer, grid fleece, windproof shell worn throughout.
- Wet and cold: merino base, fleece, waterproof shell; avoid cotton completely.
Fit and care
A fleece should sit close enough to trap air but not restrict shoulder movement on the bars. Look for a full-length zip so you can vent on climbs without removing the layer, and a chest pocket for a phone or map.
Wash fleece sparingly, inside out, on a cool cycle, and skip fabric softener, which clogs the fibres and reduces wicking. Air dry it. Treated fleeces lose water repellency over time; a wash-in treatment restores it.
Frequently asked questions
Is fleece good for mountain biking?
Yes as a mid layer. It insulates and moves moisture, but needs a windproof or waterproof shell over it because fleece blocks almost no wind.
What weight fleece should I wear riding?
Light to mid weight, roughly 100 to 200 weight, suits active riding. Heavy pile fleece is better for static use.
How should I wash technical fleece?
Inside out, cool cycle, no fabric softener, then air dry. Softener clogs fibres and reduces moisture wicking.
